Your child was diagnosed with autism...now what?
Not sure where to start now that you have a diagnosis? Feeling like you're in the desert with no water? Maybe I can help. Regardless of your child's age, my first stop would be the school system. They may be eligible for services through the county earlier than you think. If they are eligible for the early childhood program, I highly recommend it. You will get tons of support from the school at a crucial part of your journey. They can get Speech, PT and OT here. If your child is already school aged, it is so helpful to speak with their team to determine if a 504 or IEP would be helpful as well as determining if your child will need accommodations/modifications.
My next suggestion would be to explore both traditional and non traditional therapies. The waiting list can sometimes be lengthy, so prioritize this along with education.
Katie Beckett Waiver should be next on your list of things to look into. Don't skip this one. It's a grant provided to families of children with special needs and it is NOT income based. It's helpful to have your therapies already in place when you apply for this as it speeds up your approval.
I would start experimenting with sensory help next. That will be all trial and error at home, as well as in the clinic and educational settings with your child's team.
I have done my best to organize the resource tabs below in an order that feels the most beneficial. That said, every kid is different. You may find your priorities need to fall into a different pattern.
Finally, find some helpful social media accounts or websites to follow. I have gleaned the most beneficial information from wonderful specialist I have found on Instagram. I highlight these specialists regularly on the ASDinTennessee Instagram page.
